What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Could You Have It?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common but often undiagnosed sleep disorder where the upper airway repeatedly closes during sleep. When this happens, breathing stops temporarily, oxygen levels fall, and the brain briefly wakes the body to reopen the airway.
This cycle can repeat dozens of times an hour, leaving you with fragmented, poor-quality sleep, even if you think you’ve slept through the night.
Common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:
Loud snoring
Episodes of stopping breathing during sleep
Gasping, choking or gagging at night
Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue
Morning headaches
Poor concentration or memory problems
Many people normalise these symptoms or blame stress, ageing or a busy lifestyle. In reality, untreated sleep apnoea can have a serious impact on both physical and mental health.
How can I find out if I have obstructive sleep apnea?
The most reliable way to diagnose OSA is with an overnight home sleep study.
At The Better Sleep Clinic, we offer quick and convenient home sleep tests using watch-like devices with advanced technology.

What is the Home Sleep Test?
-
Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious condition. 85% of people who have it are undiagnosed.
Our home sleep tests provide a quick, convenient and affordable way to have sleep apnea confirmed. Our results are guaranteed in all NHS clinics or your money back.
-
These are small watch-like devices that are worn on your wrist overnight. This is cutting-edge technology that gives extraordinarily detailed information on your sleep - which is a fascinating thing to uncover, and a vital step in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.
-
The home sleep test measures a number of different things:
Blood oxygen levels
Heart rate
Activity of your nervous system (called peripheral arterial tone, or PAT)
Movement (known as actigraphy)
Snoring pattern and volume
Chest movement and breathing effort
Body position
-
Our home sleep tests include free delivery. They are dispatched the same day if ordered before 12pm.
FAQs
-
We offer free next-day delivery.
-
We will get your results back to you within 2 working days, which is quicker than any other clinic.
Your sleep report is made up of your sleep test results and the information you provide on your patient registration form, so both of these need to be completed in order for us to finish your report.
-
Unfortunately, our tests are for over 18s only.
-
Yes, we are happy to provide the consultation over the phone instead – just let us know.
-
We offer CPAP therapy and can set you up usually within a week. If you would prefer treatment through the NHS we are happy to contact your GP with your sleep test results, diagnosis and recommendation for referral into an NHS clinic, however the waiting time can be many months.
-
Our home sleep tests use WatchPAT devices, which are also used in some of the more advanced NHS sleep clinics. Our sleep tests results are accepted in all NHS sleep clinics.
-
While there can be some variation in your symptoms from night to night, it is not often significant enough that a test would come up with a different result. It is extremely rare that a test would ever need repeating.
-
The home sleep devices that we use in the sleep test and consultation package are reusable and need to be sent back to us within 5 days of receiving it.
If you aren’t sure when you will get around to doing the test, but would still like to book the package, just let us know and we can send you a single-use device instead, that has no time limit on when you do the test.
-
Once the test has been started, it cannot be paused and started again another night. However, our home sleep tests are very sensitive and accurate, and an entire night of sleep is not always needed in order to make a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.
